Glasgow Celtic are one off the biggest clubs in the United Kingdom with a rich history in the Scottish premier league winning the league 52 times, Scottish cup record off 40 times and the Scottish league cup 21 times. Despite all the domestic success one trophy Celtic won in the 20th century that has carried on a legacy that lives on today. Celtic in the 1966/67 season had to play 8 games to reach the final off the champions league beating FC Zurich, FC Nates, Vojvodina then playing As Dukla Praha. This lead Celtic to a final versus Inter Milan in Lisbon, Portugal. The full Celtic side apart from one all grew up within a 30 mile radius off Celtic park. Each player being fans off the club and this game is what put Celtic on the European map. With 7,000 Celtic fans going to the game which was a brilliant turn out for the time, saw Celtic go 1-0 down to Inter Milan in the first 6 minutes. A Sandro Mazzola penalty put Inter Milan in the driving seat early. The first half finished with Inter holding onto the 1-0 lead with Legendary Celtic manager Jock Stein needing to work his magic for Celtic to come back. It took Celtic 18 minutes after the second half whistle to get their team level with Tommy Gemmell scoring the equaliser in the 63rd minute. This really gave Celtic a chance to be back in the game and have enough time to knock on the door and try find a winning goal. And find the winning goal they did with Stevie Chalmers scoring for Celtic in the 84th minute to eventually seal the champions league for Glasgow Celtic which made them the first British club to win the cup. Even though the match was 56 years ago the legacy off the 1967 Celtic team and their victory has lived on for the club in massive ways. The “Lisbon lions” have a stand at Celtic park named after them, regular chants from fans, certain statues outside to remember the victory and players, tifo’s made by fans to show respect to the legends as well. This shows how important European competition is for a club no matter when they win it and gives fans memories off a lifetime and the accomplishments off a legendary team can live on for over 50 years in the future. For these reasons that is why I rank this Celtic side high up in my mind of legendary teams to have won this prestigious trophy and I am a firm believer that even though this happened in a very different era of football that should not put down the achievements and the memory of the Lisbon lions deserve to live on all through time.
